
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Shaylene Karisma is a Bronx born Puerto Rican photographer, who currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. In 2018, she began her studies at Hunter College where she studied Psychology. In 2020, she attended Christine Valmy International School to obtain her New York State Esthetics License.
At the start of 2024, she began photographing fashion models signed to Revolt Model Agency in New York City, creating editorials, and commercial content. That same year she started her first documentary portrait series. Titled Six Degrees of Separation, it highlights the tight-knit connections between New Yorkers through environmental portraits of six subjects in their neighborhoods or favorite places.
In 2025, she was chosen to showcase her work with Monad Agency during their “Visions of NYC” and “End of Year” group exhibitions in Brooklyn. At the end of the same year she began Mother, Do You Hear Me? where she explores spirituality and ancestral guidance and her personal relationship with the divine through a mix of staged and still life images.
In 2026, she received the Director’s Fellowship at the International Center of Photography (ICP) to attend the Documentary and Visual Storytelling program in New York.
